Cricket is here! That’s right. There is a new club at Edison High School, and it is in fact, the Cricket Club! The EHS Cricket Club was born out of a shared passion for the sport among a group of upperclassmen. Recognizing the lack of opportunities to play cricket within the school, Yash Tiwari ‘24 and his friends decided to unite and create a platform for cricket enthusiasts to come together, learn, and experience the joy of this traditional game played with bat and ball.
With the support of the school administration, the Cricket Club was officially launched, marking a milestone for Edison High.
This is no ordinary addition; it’s one fitting of local interest and a sport that is beginning to capture the hearts of millions globally. The Indian Premier League, a cricket tournament held in India once a year, attracts over 1.3 billion people annually and over 11.3 billion dollars in revenue.
What makes the cricket club particularly exciting is its inclusivity. Unlike some sports that may require prior experience, specialized skills, or tryouts; cricket can be easily played by everyone.
“There is no experience required for the club as it is open to all!” said Yash Tiwari ‘24, the social media manager.
“Whether you’re a seasoned player or someone with mere curiosity about the game, there’s a place for you in Cricket Club,” says Sivamsu karthik Donepudi venkata sai’24, the club’s main coach.
The club’s emphasis is on learning and having fun together, fostering an environment where students from all backgrounds can come together to share in the joys of the sport. The Cricket Club has assembled a team of experienced and passionate coaches to guide players on this exciting journey. These mentors bring a wealth of cricketing knowledge and a commitment to nurturing the talents of club members.
The coaching staff aims to instill important life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and effective communication – qualities that extend far beyond the cricket pitch. The coaches claim that the club is a holistic initiative that encompasses physical fitness, mental well-being, and community building.
Cricket is loved by South Asians all over the world due to its rich history and the sport itself is very competitive. When the British came to the Indian subcontinent, they introduced cricket to the locals, and it was a big hit. It was such a big hit, the Indians started to spread the influence of cricket throughout South Asia, and soon, surrounding countries started playing.
Right now, the dominant countries of cricket are India, Australia, and England as they have found hidden gems within their academies and schools. Similarly, the EHS Cricket Club is attempting to help cricketers launch and make themselves known for the United States National Team.
In terms of logistics, establishing a cricket club comes with its set of requirements and challenges. The school must secure suitable facilities, including a cricket pitch and practice nets. Additionally, providing necessary equipment such as cricket bats, balls, and protective gear is essential for the smooth functioning of the club. At this time, members get their equipment on their own.
Developing a well-thought-out schedule that accommodates practices, matches, and potential tournaments will be crucial to integrating The Cricket Club seamlessly into the school’s routine.
Organizing events, fundraisers, and friendly matches will not only bring students together but also foster a sense of school pride and unity. This aspect of the club contributes to the overall positive atmosphere within the school community, enhancing the overall student experience while celebrating diversity.
All in all, this new venture isn’t just about playing a sport; it’s about creating a vibrant community where everyone has the opportunity to shine and be a part of something extraordinary.
“The Cricket Club is an amazing place to showcase your skills, make new friends, and overall, have a good time,” Tiwari said.
