On October 18, Edison High School had its first pep rally of the year as a celebration for the Homecoming dance on October 19. This pep rally was a way for the different grades to connect and come together. Whether it be through wearing their grade’s colors or cheering on the football team, students found an opportunity to express their school spirit.
”I was excited to see everybody showing their spirit for the sports team,” said Mya Quest ’27.
”I was very excited for the pep rally, because it got canceled last year so I have never seen one,” said Mr. Steven Sharp, an EHS history teacher.
The activities in this pep rally included teacher and student water dunking, a marching band performance, a cheerleading showcase, the Fall athletes walk, the homecoming court walk and an inflatable costume relay race against Mr. Ross.
Students got the chance to cast a vote on which teacher should be dunked with a bucket of water. After the vote, History Teacher Mr. Michael Glackin, Math/Computer Science Teacher Mr. John Krajunus, and Assistant Principal Mr. Matthew Zapoticzny were the victims of the dunking.
“I didn’t mind if students voted for me–if it’s going to make our school even a little bit better, I’m happy to participate!” said Glackin.
Teachers find pep rallies to bring the school community together and a good way of increasing student involvement.
“As a coach, I love pep rallies because of its school spirit and it’s like being a part of a team. The comradery of being a part of something is important, it makes people feel like you’re a part of something more than yourself,” said Ms. Tracie Smith, Bowling and Boys Volleyball Coach.
Soumita Banerjee, a fellow homecoming nominee, said that she enjoyed her last pep rally and also felt it was emotional because it was her last.
“This was one of the most memorable pep rallies I have ever had in high school, because of the fact that I was more involved. Being a part of it was really nice, and being recognized was great. It was really emotional, because I felt the most school spirit,” said Banerjee.
