On October 14 and 15, the girls varsity tennis team defeated Monroe 3–2 and Woodbridge Magnet 3–2.
At Monroe, the team was led by Nandini Chandra ‘26, Breanna Smithen ‘26, and Vijeta Garg ‘27, who won their singles matches, ultimately securing a victory for the Eagles. Chandra won both her matches 6–1, Smithen won both her matches 6–4, and Garg won her matches 6–3 and 6–2.
Despite facing challenging players and missing the second singles player, Emma Feng ‘26, the Eagles fought hard and managed to win.
“As a team during those two matches, we worked really well together! Everyone tried their best and kept their effort high during all the matches!” said Chandra.
In the match against Woodbridge Magnet, Chandra and Feng, the first and second singles players, lost their matches, having faced difficult opponents.
“Their first singles player prevailed over Nandini Chandra in a controversial match 6–3 and 6–4. Many of the points were contested,” said Coach Wesley Smith.
Smithen, the third singles, won her matches 6–1 twice. The first doubles, Garg and Rucha Deshmukh ‘26, and the second doubles, Liz Reyes ‘26 and Joy Jiang ‘26, also won their matches.
“Against Woodbridge Magnet, our singles dealt with quite skilled players, so our doubles and third singles were able to lock in and win the match for EHS,” said Garg.
Reflecting on their matches against Monroe and Woodbridge, the Eagles felt the importance of individual effort.
“Again, the best part about the EHS tennis team is that we get to play an individual sport—but for the school—so we feel like we’re playing for a bit more,” said Garg.
Overall, the girls varsity tennis team ended the season 6–10 total and 2–8 in the Red Division for the GMC, with mixed reactions from the players.
“Overall, I’m really happy with how we did this season! We lost a lot of seniors last year, but we definitely bounced back better than I expected!” said Chandra.
