Eagle’s Eye and Yearbook Club member Zeynep Kacan ‘26 has been honored as Rotary’s Senior of the Month for January.

Throughout high school, Kacan has been involved in The Eagle’s Eye and the Yearbook Club. She also volunteered at a juvenile court and worked as an assistant manager at a clothing store.

But, Kacan’s most profound point of pride is that she was born and raised in Istanbul, Türkiye.

“People around me always know I’m Turkish,” says Kacan. “It’s a big part of who I am.”

Moving to the United States in the fifth grade, she didn’t speak any English. Since her small Texan school didn’t offer ESL, she learned the language on her own—a testament to her determination and resilience.

Her selection as senior of the month underscores her growth over time.

“Taking on leadership roles at such a young age taught me how to be responsible for others, communicate clearly, and manage real-world expectations while balancing demanding coursework,” said Kacan.

When reflecting on her favorite part of high school, Kacan highlights the academic experiences that shaped her growth as a student and thinker. She notes the way writing allowed her to express herself in a genuine way, think on a deeper level, and be more confident in her ideas.

Kacan expresses deep gratitude to several teachers who made a lasting impact on her high school journey. She thanks AP English Language and Composition teacher Ms. Diane Frey for helping her grow as a writer and reader while consistently supporting and believing in her over three years. She is also thankful for her AP World History teacher, Ms. Kaitlin Hoey, whose class allowed her to explore her passion for history through creative and meaningful projects. Lastly, she thanks Principal Mr. Charles Ross, for always taking the time to listen to and care about his students.

After graduation, Kacan plans to attend college with a pre-law focus while continuing to work and pursue internships to prepare for law school.

To underclassmen, Kacan offers thoughtful advice about growth, self-compassion, and authenticity.

“One thing I wish I had understood earlier is that challenging yourself looks different for everyone,” said Kacan. “Growth doesn’t always mean joining clubs or holding visible leadership roles—it can also mean pushing through rigorous classes, balancing work and school, or learning to speak up for yourself.”
