Theater Department Secretary and Class of ‘26 Council Vice President Suzette Stephen ‘26 has been honored as February’s Rotary Senior of the Month.
Stephen has made it her priority to be as involved as possible both in school and in her community. At EHS, she has been an active member of the Theater department for all four years and is serving as the Secretary for her senior year. She has also been involved in Student Council since her freshman year, currently serving as her class council’s vice president after holding the role of co-vice president during her junior year. Beyond that, she is the secretary of the Black Student Union, a Step Captain for EHS Diamonds, and a member of the French Club, Dance Ensemble, Mental Health Awareness Club, Chamber Orchestra, Students of Strength, National Honor Society, and French National Honor Society.
Stephen’s favorite part of high school has been ending each day at theater rehearsal.
“Being surrounded by people who share my interests and passions has been one of the most meaningful parts of my experience,” said Stephen. “Theater has pushed me to become a stronger, more disciplined worker, taught me how to multitask, and strengthened my ability to communicate with others.”
Outside of school, Stephen has been a Girl Scout since kindergarten, dedicating hours to community service, including volunteering for several local organizations such as St. Matthew’s Food Pantry. She also serves as an altar server at St. Matthew’s and was honored to become Head Altar Server this year. Additionally, she is the co-president of the church’s youth group.
Of all her involvements, Stephen is most proud of her journey in Girl Scouts.
“Over the years, I’ve explored everything from camping and sewing to coding and leadership,” said Stephen. “More importantly, Girl Scouts has helped me grow into myself. It strengthened my commitment to service and gave me space to better understand myself and my identity.”
Stephen expresses gratitude to her second-grade teacher, Ms. Patty King from St. Matthew’s School, who taught her how to love learning English and embrace what challenges her. In high school, she thanks history teacher Mr. Michael Glackin, AP World History teacher Dr. Gene Nasser, and French teachers Madame Kathleen Ellis and Madame Deana Loria for supporting, challenging, and encouraging her throughout these four years.
After graduation, Stephen plans to attend a four-year college to study food science and nutrition, hoping to earn a nutrition license and become a registered dietitian. After completing her degree, she plans to receive a culinary license as well. Her dream is to work as a chef and practice as a nutritionist on the side while continuing her passion for theater in her local community and giving back through community service.
To underclassmen, Stephen emphasizes that it’s never too late to try something new.
“If I was put on this earth to do nothing, I would. But I feel as if I’m better off doing everything,” said Stephen. “I encourage everyone to do the same. Do what makes you feel happy and fulfilled. And start now. The earlier the better.”
