During the recent holiday buzz preceding winter break at Edison High School, the National Art Honor Society (NAHS) hosted their first-ever interactive event of the year, a “Paint and Sip,” on December 19. The event was a place for students, younger children, and parents to wind down in a cozy setting before the holiday break. Known for their colorful gnomes, NAHS allowed attendees to sip on hot chocolate while painting their very own gnome to take home as an event souvenir.
“We wanted to paint something holiday-themed, but we didn’t want to focus on a specific holiday, so we decided to paint gnomes,” said NAHS president Sylar Pawlik ’24.
Each attendee received a canvas and palette of paint to bring their creation to life, and Art Teacher Ms. Kelley Gavor provided instruction throughout the process. Individuals of all ages could design as they pleased, and each canvas soon became a unique display of each artist’s creativity and holiday spirit. Alongside the craft, numerous holiday snack and drink options were available, but being the event’s namesake, hot chocolate took the spotlight.
“It was really exciting helping out with this event because it is my first year being a part of NAHS,” said Annika Villanueva ‘25. “I enjoyed seeing everyone having fun and watching the gnomes come to life.”
For students, the event was an opportunity to relax during the final week before winter break. This event was also an occasion for family bonding between students and their parents, allowing them to share in the merriment of a relaxing evening activity.
“Friends and family were laughing and enjoying themselves,” said Pawlik.
Overall, Paint and Sip received positive reviews for its peaceful atmosphere, enjoyable painting experience, and appetizing snacks.
“The event was successful,” said Pawlik. “Many parents and friends came to support members of the paint night. I would describe the mood as joyful.”
