Eagles Basketball Edges Out JP
The boys basketball team had a great bounce-back match, with a 52–50 win against J.P. Stevens on Monday, January 22.
From tipoff to the end of the first quarter, the boys basketball team dominated the Hawks. At the end of the first quarter, the boys had almost double the amount of points the Hawk had, leading 17–9. However, the rest of the game would prove closer. The team would be outscored in both the second and third quarters. Coming into the fourth quarter, they held a narrow one-point lead. The Eagles’ defense continued its brilliant effort in the fourth, limiting J.P. Stevens to only ten points. Ultimately, this was enough for Edison to get its first victory against J.P. Stevens since the 2020-21 season.
The second-lowest scoring game that Edison has been a part of this year, it was a battle between two great defenses. Despite the best efforts of Anthony Hicks ‘24 of J.P. Stevens, who put up 23 points, the Eagles were able to win, in part due to their lockdown perimeter defense on the rest of the Hawks.
The boys were led by Dedrick Harvey ‘25, who scored thirteen points, setting a career high for him. He made two spectacular three-pointers en route to this offensive feat. He was also active on the glass, getting six rebounds, all while demonstrating his playmaking prowess as he ended up with a team-high of four assists. Dheeraj Samparaboyina ‘26 had thirteen points as well, continuing a very good season for him. Tori’ahn Rattray ‘24 also chipped in, scoring ten points and a team-high seven rebounds. He played both perimeter and post-defense, ultimately getting a team-high two steals.
The team’s three-point shooting was crucial to their victory. The Eagles ended up making six three-pointers compared to just one three-pointer for the Hawks, an advantage that ended up impacting the game immensely.

This was a big game for the Eagles who, up until this point, were struggling to find their groove this season, coming off of a six-game losing streak and a 3–12 record. With the streak broken, the team was 4–12 as of the time of writing.
Edison Girls Bowling Beats Out J.P. Stevens
J.P. Stevens and Edison girls bowling were pitted against one another in the next of five athletic events. The Edison team showcased a commanding effort, beating the Hawks 4–0 in a competitive matchup. 
Right off the bat, the ladies dominated, winning game one, hitting 867 pins compared to 692 for J.P. Stevens. Riding on this momentum, the team was able to win a tight game two and win game three by a comfortable margin. In total, Edison hit 2,461 pins in the game compared to the Hawks’ 2,122.
The effort was led by Pooja Katara ‘24, who had her best set of the season. She averaged 170.67 pins per game, including a crucial game three, knocking down 183 pins to finish the game. Katara knocked down 512 pins in total in this game, her highest in the season.
Martyna Stalenyj ‘24 and Sara Nasrullah ‘25 averaged the second and third most pins per game for the Eagles in this match, with 142.67 and 133.33 pins per game, respectively. Stalenyj had an important game two, knocking down 169 pins, the second most from any Eagle in the match. Overall, the Eagles had a great performance against the Hawks, with each player chipping in to win the game.
With this win, the girls bowling team rose to 8–5, and J.P. Stevens fell to 7–4.
EHS Wrestling Dominates Hawks
Rounding out the trend of dominant wins over the Hawks, the wrestling team delivered a dominant 66–18 win in their meet against J.P. Stevens.
The win was full of individual successes for the Eagles, and after the first few matches, it was clear who the victor would be. The wrestling team would start out with eight straight wins from Matthew Weinbrenner ‘26, Jeremy Negron ‘26, Lucas Almonte ‘25, Fernando Avellan ‘26, Brett Bills ‘26, Caleb Gluchowski ‘26, Justin Deggan ‘25, and Jaden Delabarrera ‘24—who all secured six points for Edison to start off the meet 48–0.
Negron continued his undefeated season with yet another win. Gluchowski and Avellan also had impressive showings, with both of them pinning down their opponents in less than forty seconds.
While the rest of the meet would be more even with both Edison and J.P. Stevens winning three matches each out of the final six matches in the meet, the Eagles’ dominant start was too much to overcome for the Hawks. With this meet, Edison rises to 9–4 on the season, while J.P. Stevens falls to 3–13. The Eagles are now in second place in the GMC White Division.
Boys Bowling Team Suffers Defeat Against Hawks
Edison’s boys Bowling team played J.P. Stevens on January 22 at Majestic Lanes. The last time they played J.P. Stevens this season, the Eagles ended up prevailing. This time, however, the Eagles lost to J.P. Stevens in a disappointing 4–0 defeat at Majestic Lanes.
Owing in part to the pressure that Charlie Hyman-Cruz ‘26 (who led the match with 512 pins knocked down) and the other Hawks put, the boys bowling team never truly got in their groove. The game got off to a shaky start, a start that would end up defining the following games. Hungry for revenge following their loss in their last match against the Eagles, J.P. Stevens took the first game of this match with a 133-pin victory, knocking down 817 pins compared to 684 for Edison. The Eagles bounced back in game two, but J.P. Stevens had an even better game. Specifically, J.P. Stevens knocked down a staggering 868 pins to the Eagles’ 764. J.P. Stevens started losing momentum in game three; nonetheless, they ended up narrowly winning that game as well, completing the sweep. The Hawks knocked down 717 pins compared to 707 for the Eagles. While the boys bowling team knocked down 2,155 pins, they were outmatched by the Hawks, who knocked down 2,402 pins.
Despite the loss, there were some positives in this game. John Re ‘25 had another 500-pin game, knocking down a team-high of 502 pins. James Stavenick ‘25 also pitched in, knocking down 472 pins.
The loss puts the Eagles at an 8–5 record, marking their second consecutive loss. Nevertheless, the Eagles find solace in their record, knowing that they have already won as many games as they did in the last two seasons combined. The Eagles hope to bounce back against St. Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday, January 23.
Edison Girls Basketball Beaten by JP
In the last game of the multi-sport, week-long showdown against J.P. Stevens, the girls basketball team fell to the Hawks 45–41.
From tipoff to halftime, the game was extremely close, with the score being 22–21 in favor of the Eagles. However, a dominant sixteen-point quarter by the Hawks, compared to Edison’s four, put the Eagles in an eleven-point deficit that they were not able to overcome.

Ghelsey Go ‘24 led the girls basketball team with fifteen points. Go did a great job in drawing fouls and getting to the free-throw line, ultimately making six free throws. Moreover, Isabella Charles ‘25 had a career-high of ten points and Olivia Smart ‘25 added eight points to the effort.
The Eagles hope to prevent these turnovers in future games, as they have been a recurring problem throughout the season.
While the Eagles dominated at the free throw line, outscoring J.P. Stevens 13–3 in the category, the Hawks hit more two-point and three-point field goals than Edison, one of the main reasons the Eagles lost the game. In addition, the Hawks’ defense was on point, latching four blocks and twelve steals as a team in the game. The Eagles hope to prevent these turnovers in future games, as they have been a recurring problem throughout the season. Although the game was close overall, a few minor issues in addition to the Hawks’ dominant third quarter led to the Eagles losing this game.
With this loss, Edison fell to 6–13 on the season, while J.P. Stevens rose to 13–2.
