Mei Kim ‘24 has been chosen as March’s Rotary Senior of the Month for Edison High School.
Throughout her high school experience, most of Kim’s extracurricular activities were volunteering. She helps make meals for the New Brunswick community and volunteers at her local church.
“Giving back to my community is something I value greatly,” said Kim.
On the academic side, Kim spent her past two summers researching fluorescent vesicles and the causes of Parkinson’s disease. For EHS, she plays Varsity Softball and helped her team get a winning record for the first time in ten years. She is also the president of the French Club, National Honor Society, and National English Honor Society while also being involved in the EHS Jazz Ensemble, UNICEF, and Peacock Society. After school, Kim usually does her homework, dabbles on her piano, organizes and plans, or hangs out with her friends.
Kim will be attending Duke University in the fall to major in chemistry on a pre-med track. She hopes to become an anesthesiologist or oncologist in the future.
One piece of advice Kim gives to the underclassmen is to live in the moment.
“Have fun and enjoy your time at EHS while you can! Get out of your comfort zone and get involved in as much as you can,” said Kim.
Some memorable high school moments Kim will always treasure are her Jazz Ensemble concerts where she played the keyboard, the football games she attended with her friends, and the softball games that she played.
“Whenever I feel discouraged or overwhelmed, I try to think of the past or future me and try to be the best version of myself that my childhood or future me would be proud of,” said Kim when asked what motivates her.
One word Kim chooses to describe her high school experience is “surreal.” While there were challenges that Kim faced, she believes that the academic validation and friendships she made along the way were all worth it.
