On September 10th, Edison High’s Girls Tennis Team faced their rivals: J.P. Stevens. For years, J.P. Stevens overpowered EHS, maintaining a streak of winning against the Lady Eagles and racking up 106 wins. However, this time, the girls were determined to finally overcome the Hawks. The girls won three of the five matches, ultimately claiming the victory.

“Despite the tough losses endured against JP Stevens, we always entered the matches against J.P. Stevens thinking we would prevail,” said Head Coach Mr. Wesley Smith. “On September 10th, all those matches against JP Stevens of the former years went by the wayside as our team came through with the narrow 3-2 win over our cross town rival.”

In the first singles match, Edison’s Nandini Chandra ‘26, was pitted against Shinjini Chandra ‘27 from J.P. Stevens. Nandini Chandra beat her opponent in straight sets with identical scores of 6–4 and 6–4. Chandra converted on break points in timely fashion, enough to ultimately win her the game.

Edison’s second singles player, Khaliyah Revan ‘25, played against J.P. Stevens’ Neeva Sule ‘26. Revan dominated this match, showcasing her skill and prowess. In the first set, Revan outclassed Sule with a score of 6–1. Proving her consistency, Revan continued to emerge victorious in the match, bagelling Sule in the second set 6–0.

In the third singles match, Edison’s Lojein Elgebrawi ‘25 faced off against Sara Chitnis ‘27. Elgebrawi ultimately won in a straight–sets match; the first set read a score of 6–2 and the second set read 6–4, both in favor of Elgebrawi. This victory marks Edison’s sweep in the singles matchups against the Hawks, meaning that irrespective of the doubles results, the Eagles would break their losing streak.

In the first doubles matchup, the Lady Eagles faced a tough challenge against J.P. Stevens. Breanna Smithen ‘26 and Vijeta Garg ‘27 of Edison, were pitted against Sophie Sun ‘27 and Neha Shinil ‘27. Sun and Shinil defeated Smithen and Garg in two sets with scores of 6–4 and 6–1, respectively. This match gave J.P. Stevens their first victory.

In the second doubles matchup, Sanaya Patel ‘25 and Shivangi Bhuyan ‘25 were pitted in a difficult matchup against Aditi Rajamaran ‘27 and Tvisha Parish ‘25. Ultimately, Patel and Bhuyan lost in straight sets, losing the first set 6–3 and the second set 6–1.

Despite the disappointing doubles results, the Lady Eagles were still able to secure victory against the Hawks, winning 3–2. After over a hundred games lost to the JP Stevens’ girls tennis team, Edison created history by winning this match. This win marks a sizable improvement from last year itself, as Edison lost 4–1 against the Hawks in both encounters last year.

Moreover, as this victory followed their recent win against Sayreville, the Lady Eagles greatly boosted their morale and confidence. Edison currently has a seasonal record of 6-2. The Eagles look forward to using this momentum against their next game against Metuchen on September 26th.
