Photo Essay: Paws and Leaves

When you think about life in a positive way, many opportunities arise. A perfect example could be found in “man’s best friend”: dogs. It’s a perfect fall day. Red, orange, and yellow leaves descend from the trees, blowing in the autumn breeze. You hear the sound of crunching leaves to your left. You turn, to see a little puppy, a Yorkie, smiling at you with his eyes. A dead leaf is stuck to his fur, but as you try to pull it off, he dashes to the left, hoping to instigate play.

You pick up a stick and throw it, starting a game of fetch. Playing with the dog is fun, but you don’t take the time to appreciate it. Other thoughts are on your mind. Work, school, and the argument you had earlier that morning overtake your thoughts. But, as soon as you look at the puppy rolling around in the foliage, your mind forgets. You are focused on what is happening now. Not the past, not the future.

You look into the puppy’s eyes once more. You feel happy and refreshed. You feel good about life, about now. You know you won’t ever experience the amount of innocence and joy the puppy has. At the end of the day, the puppy lays near your feet, enjoying life with you.

The dog gets ready to shake his fur. He removes all of the leaves which are stuck on him from rolling in the grass.

The dog stops suddenly. He hears the barking from another canine. He looks around, trying to locate the puppy, his neighborhood friend..

This eight year old dog named Blitz still acts like a puppy. He loves running around in his backyard, enjoying the autumn weather, and chasing other dogs, or squirrels, of course.

The dog, now tired, looks for a place to lay down. He sniffs it out, looking for a perfect patch of soft grass to rest on.

The dog finally finds his resting place. When dogs lay on their backs, they feel safe and secure in their environment. He rolls around in the foliage, enjoying life.
