Mr. Charles Ross, Edison High’s principal for over fifteen years, is a notable figure. Inspired by the perspective of hard work, access to education, and the success of students, Ross strives to foster a better environment around the Eagle’s Nest. With a background in education, his journey to leadership is a testament to his commitment to transform the lives of thousands of students in their four-year tenure at Edison High.
Ross’s inspiration to become a principal stemmed from his experiences as a father and a teacher. He saw the opportunity to further enhance the school and the local community.
“I was a teacher, and I had kids, and kids cost a lot of money,” said Ross. This realization led him to pursue the position of a principal. “About fifteen years ago, I saw the opportunity to become the principal of Edison High School, so I applied and got the job.”
In his opinion, the most rewarding aspect of taking on such a role was “watching young people grow, seeing how the school’s improve,” and reflecting on the achievements of students who have gone to successful colleges and careers. His passion for education is evident in his daily interactions with students, where he finds joy in greeting them in the morning and congratulating them on their successes.
Ross runs a busy schedule, often operating on ten-to-fifteen-hour work days, ensuring that his presence is noted within the school’s administration and students. His typical day begins at 5:30 a.m., where he enters the building to first ensure that everything is in working condition for the start of the school day.
Ross’s day involves clearing his inbox, trying to check in on every classroom once a day, ensuring that there are substitute teachers for classes, making announcements, and greeting kids in the morning. Throughout the day, he goes through a series of meetings with parents, but also with teachers on ways they can improve their teaching. His main goal is to be present throughout the school day, ensuring that students see him for personal motivation. Closing out the day, Ross attends events related to school spirit such as games, concerts, or plays.
A leader in the community, Ross emphasizes the importance of balancing the day-to-day operations of the school. “You have to have high energy,” he said, highlighting the need to empower teachers and faculty members to share in the workload. Furthermore, he also prioritizes self-care, saying, “I try to make sure that I exercise and I eat right.” His approach to leadership is what allows him to maintain the rigor needed to oversee a school with 2,400 students and more than 250 employees.
Throughout his career at Edison High, Ross has accumulated many fond memories.
“I’ve had so many; whether it’s concerts that people have had, or thinking about one year we had five buses of kids that went to see a girls’ basketball game,” he said. But, the moments wherein students overcome challenges are what he cherishes the most. “It’s just so nice to see the students, some of them who didn’t expect to make it,” he said, emphasizing the profound impact of education on student lives.

Looking ahead, Ross has many plans for the school and its student body. “We’re looking to try to get some additions and some renovations.” His commitment to enhancing the education environment reflects his belief in the crucial role that school plays in individual lives.
“People’s reactions to working as a part of a system, people’s reactions to working with authority,” Ross said, highlighting the essential role of education in good citizenship. Ross views EHS as a “touchstone” for the community, where students not only learn but also contribute positively to their surroundings.
When discussing the pivotal role of teachers, Ross said, “When you talk to people, you can always ask them, ‘Who’s that one teacher that made a difference in your life?’” He believes that educators are instrumental in guiding students to discover their unique path, mentioning a teacher that was a great influence in his path to success. “Everybody has a story of a teacher that inspired them,” he added.
Ross also tries to embody qualities that inspire those around him. “Caring about the people that you lead, and loving individuals even when they don’t do good things,” he said, emphasizing the importance of empathy in leadership. His approach fosters a supportive environment where both students and staff can thrive. For students looking to make an impact, Ross offers valuable advice: He encourages involvement in local organizations and emphasizes the significance of treating others with respect.
“Stay small, and find small ways to help people. Sometimes we look for a splash, but we’re not always going to be able to get that splash. Try to help the person next to me, and not worry about a person 5,000 or 20,000 miles away,” he said.
The heart of Edison High School, Ross continues to inspire, lead, and nurture the next generation, proving that education is not just about academics but about building community and fostering growth. His unwavering dedication to his students and staff, making sure to greet students in the morning and trying to check every classroom at least once a day, makes him a vital leader in the educational landscape. His impact will be felt for years to come.
