Mayor Sam Joshi of Edison Township has been a quintessential leader in municipal politics and affairs. Having served as mayor of Edison since 2022, he has focused on addressing the needs and concerns of residents and advocating for legislation that benefits them.

His passion for public service relates to his childhood interest in government.

“Ever since I was a child, I’ve been fascinated with government and politics,” Joshi recalled. “I quickly realized how the government can make an impact on its constituents.”

He previously served as an intern under former Edison Mayor George A. Spadoro, where he was inspired by the impact that a government can have on its residents.

“I was fascinated by it, and I wanted to keep learning within different departments, and the more I learned, the more I kept wanting to pursue the career,” said Joshi.

During this time, while on a bus ride, he overheard a passenger telling her friend that she wouldn’t have enough medication because the bus stops weren’t going to take them from her house to the pharmacy. After hearing of this, he took action by speaking with Spadoro.

“I told him the problem, and he said, ‘Ok, we’ll fix it; just fix the bus routes, and make sure they get picked up,’” said Joshi. “I couldn’t believe how quickly a decision could be made by a single individual, and imagine what he can do for thousands of people.”

As mayor, Joshi has faced many challenges that have tested his ability to lead effectively and bring relief to residents. He recognizes that every challenge requires different responses, and that there is no exact playbook on responding to them.

“With myself being mayor, director of public safety, and part of the emergency management team, every emergency requires adapting and thinking on your feet quickly,” said Joshi.

Having served since 2022, Edison Mayor Sam Joshi believes there is no exact manual in being a leader, but simply adapting and acting quickly when a situation arises.

Despite the challenges and responsibilities that the office of the mayor carries, Joshi is motivated to serve his constituents and to be the advocate of their voices. He also enjoys being able to encourage young people to serve their community and get involved in public service.

“I love what I do. I thoroughly love it. What drives me is the ability to make the impact that we are making,” Joshi said. “What also drives me is speaking to youth, especially to drive them and encourage them to get involved in public service.”

With his long tenure in the political realm, Joshi believes that the ability to empathize with others is an essential aspect of effective leadership.

“I think it’s extremely important to listen about where people’s concerns are stemming from, how they’re feeling, and why they’re feeling a certain way,” Joshi said. “Putting yourself in the shoes of that individual or resident, and acting appropriately.”

One of the most notable figures in the Edison community, Joshi has some invaluable pieces of advice for students seeking to make an impact in their schools and communities.

“Never give up on your dreams, and find a way to have your dreams aligned with public service. When you’re in public service, you’re making a lasting impact for your own neighbors and community,” he said.
