EHS English teacher Ms. Amy Grubb is a passionate dance mom, crocheter, and baseball enthusiast. On top of all her hobbies and being the dedicated mom of two kids, Grubb also takes care of a 67-gallon tank holding a variety of fish: two honey gouramis, eight catfish, shrimp, snails, and more.
After seeing a display at PetSmart, Grubb’s daughter decided she wanted an aquatic companion, which sparked Grubb’s own passion for fish. Upon buying the colorful betta fish her daughter had her eye on, Grubb went on to learn more about the different kinds of fish and the conditions they would require.
She slowly started expanding the size of her tank as she added more and more unique species of fish and aquatic decorations. She concentrated on finding the ideal fish, aquascaping the tank, and aesthetically decorating it with rocks, driftwood, and plants.

“Each betta fish has its own personality,” said Grubb.
According to Grubb, the fish don’t interfere with her daily routine besides having to feed them every night. Because owning an aquarium was more complicated than it appeared, she learned a lot about it. She needed to educate herself on the nitrogen cycle, maintaining fish health, and preventing ammonia buildup in the tank.
“You can’t really see a veterinarian for fish,” Grubb jokingly added.
Despite any challenges, Grubb remarks that keeping fish is more relaxing than one would expect.
“It’s a nice change from my two dogs,” said Grubb. “It’s calming to watch the fish swim,” said Grubb.
