On September 30, the Edison High School (EHS) varsity boys soccer team defeated New Brunswick 5–4, after being down 1–3 at halftime.

The Eagles started strong, with Emmanuel Kostis ‘26 scoring to give the Eagles a 1–0 lead early on. However, the team lost momentum as quickly as they obtained their lead, setting them back 3–1 at the end of the first half.

“Going into the game, we expected a very tough match because they play in a division higher than us, and at halftime we were down 3–1,” said Aprant Sahoo ‘26, a varsity midfielder.

“The first half started strong for Edison, but New Brunswick found an opening and took a hefty lead,” said Kush Patel ‘28, the junior varsity goalkeeper who watched the game.

“It was an intense game, especially being down 3–1 at halftime. I knew we had to step it up in the second half,” said Kostis.

Taking the halftime to recollect, Edison indeed stepped up its game in the second half by scoring four goals, started by Aijlis Kaloci ‘27. Kostis then went on to score three more of the team’s five goals, securing the 5–4 win.

Post-game, the team was extremely proud of their performance, reflecting on their halftime recollections that boosted Edison’s momentum.

“I’m really proud that I was able to score four goals to help lead our comeback,” said Kostis. “It was also our teamwork and determination that made the difference.”

Although EHS boys soccer ultimately did not exceed their GMC group, this win against New Brunswick was a major turning point in the team’s season, ending their season on a brighter note.

“This game was a turning point in our otherwise unlucky season, giving us the confidence we needed to beat teams like South Brunswick later on,” said Sahoo.
