Orchestra: Last Concert with Ms. Leghorn
On Thursday, December 19, the EHS Orchestra had their winter concert from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Before the concert, the orchestra took yearbook pictures on the risers. At around 6:30, the concert began with the Chamber Orchestra, who performed, “It’s The Most Wonderful Time of The Year,” “Troika,” and “Sleigh Ride,” while the audience and the rest of the orchestra watched. As the Concert Orchestra situated themselves on stage, a quintet played “The Girl with the Flaxen Hair.” Then, the entire orchestra performed the following pieces: “Bashana Haba’ah,” “Dance of the Reed Flutes,” “Silent Night,” and “Christmas Song.”
There were plenty of Christmas and holiday songs to create excitement for the holidays. The orchestra director, Ms. Leghorn, announced that this would be her last concert with the last name Leghorn as she would be returning to school after winter break as Mrs. Milicia. Also, this concert was the last winter concert for the seniors of the orchestra, making it especially memorable for them. In the lobby, there was an orchestra merchandise sale, a bake sale of goods from the juniors and seniors, and a 50/50 raffle to raise money. Overall, the orchestra concert was a fun night for both the performers and the audience.
Choir: A Night to Remember
This past December, Edison High School’s choir program, led by Mr. Kenneth Brown, held its annual winter concert. As usual, all three ensembles—Concert Choir, A Capella Choir, and Chamber Choir— performed with soloists Rodel Liquido ‘22 singing “I’ll be Home for Christmas,” Louis Forgione ‘20 singing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and Lauren Karvaski ‘20, Evan Tibok ‘22, Alayah Taha ‘21, Lawrence Chan ‘22, and Christopher Adames ‘20 all singing Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You.”
After the Chamber Singers sang “The Star-Spangled Banner,” Edison High’s Concert choir followed up with “The Sleigh (A la Russe),” “Hanerot Halalu,” “Carol of the Bells,” and “Good King Wenceslas.” The music performed by the Concert Choir left the audience in a feel-good mood, beginning the concert on a high note.
The A Capella Choir, an audition group, sang “Gloria,” which included a solo sung by Christoper Adames, “Jazz Alleluia,” “Winter’s Night”, and “Deck The Hall.” These pieces of music, with intricate rhythms and pleasing melodies, captivated the audience and left them sitting at the edge of their seats.
Before the finale, another audition group, the award-winning Chamber Singers, performed “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” “Pat-a-pan,” “White Winter Hymnal,” “Rockin’ Jerusalem,” and “Wipip!!!” The Chamber Singers’ advanced level of music allowed them to perform numerous challenging pieces, and they managed to do so flawlessly.
The night was closed out with the A Capella Choir, joined by choir alumni who were thrilled to receive another chance at singing with Edison High’s choir, performing “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” The concert was interactive as well as enjoyable. The audience loved the performances, and each choir created a night of unforgettable music.
