After another successful season alongside the Edison Marching Band, the Edison High Color Guard takes the spotlight indoors. As winter approaches, guard staff and members are hard at work preparing techniques and visuals for competitions against other indoor guard groups.

Rather than performing during the halftime at football games or during competitions along with the band, this season focuses mainly on them. A color guard consists of visual entertainment through movement and dancing, and the use of mock weaponry such as rifles, sabers, flags, and more. An indoor guard prepares a 5-8 minute performance to a prerecorded song, while an outdoor color Guard would perform to the band. Spinning, tossing, and choreographing require hard work, requiring consistent practice.

The Edison High Indoor Guard team practices for more than 10 hours a week, in addition to competing in weekly competitions and championships.

A season of long hours creates strong bonds and friendships. “My experience in guard has been rough but very enjoyable, and I can recall several difficulties, both emotional and physical, that other guard members and I have faced. But even in the many moments where I’ll feel so drained and tired of it,  I remember all of the valuable relationships and memories on guard, and why I do it, ” says Heli Parikh ‘24, a guard member for two marching seasons and a winter season.

Even though the difficulties brought by the ongoing pandemic and current rising of cases, the Edison High Indoor Guard continues its practice with competitions coming soon.
