The Edison High School swim team finished the 2019-2020 season with a split record of 4 wins and 4 losses. This year’s roster included 29 athletes, 3 of whom were captains, as well as 3 student managers. Ms. Kaitlin Hoey of the History Department returned as head coach, with Ms. Laurie Sieminski from Counseling and Mr. Charles Jammal of the Math Department acting as assistants. Said Hoey of the season, “While our final team standings did not match our efforts throughout the season, we had several great individual personal records set at GMCs. Our team is unique in the respect that we have [had] many first-time competitive swimmers join our roster.”

Raymond Chen ‘20, one of the team’s top male swimmers, said his biggest accomplishment was “winning the 50 free with a personal and school record on senior night.” Samantha Matson ‘20, one of the top female swimmers, broke the EHS girls 500-yard freestyle record that she herself set last season.

On December 5th, Chen and Matson were chosen to be two of the team’s three captains. Joining them was Aidan O’Hara ’20, who this season broke a personal and school record in the 100 meter breaststroke. Coach Hoey said that “it has been extremely rewarding to watch their growth over the years,” singling the trio captains out specifically for recognition. At meets, the captains would cheer on swimmers from behind the starting blocks, encouraging their teammates to do their best. The real team highlights were not only shown in the sport itself but in the people on the team. “The team has a lot of different types of people,” Matson said, “but they’re all coming together to achieve similar goals. There are a lot of new swimmers that have made a lot of improvements because the team is supportive and everyone helps one another.”

This year Swim is graduating 14 of its members. “The seniors graduating this year are the first group that Coach Sieminksi and I have had the pleasure of coaching since their freshman year,” Hoey said. The departing swimmers are Parth Aditya ’20, Valeria Andrade ’20, Janitza Aragon ’20, Raymond Chen ’20, Manvay Dangi ’20, Simran Gholap ’20, Samantha Matson ’20, Aidan O’Hara ’20, Yogesh Ramani ’20, Andrew Solomon ’20, Autumn Vickery ’20, and team managers Arisha Khan ’20, Lily Li ’20, and Angela Tuwo ’20. The team encourages any interested swimmers to come out for next year’s season.
