A teacher of statistics and regular of Room 226, Ms. Katherine Makovec is Edison High’s Teacher of the Year. Passionate in her work and efforts, she is honored to be selected for the 2024–2025 award.
“In an environment like this, where everyone is hardworking and dedicated, I find it special that I was recognized,” said Makovec.
An 18 year veteran of EHS, Makovec has discovered an exciting environment with opportunities for connections and growth in the school. Whether in the classroom or for the school at large, she takes seriously the fact that she can have a lasting effect.
Makovec tries to create a family inside her classes, wanting to be more than just a teacher. Keeping that goal in mind, she is committed to realizing her full potential and makes learning an enjoyable experience for the students.
“When it comes to the classroom, I am not teaching statistics, but students. The goal I keep in mind is to create a good relationship between my students and me,” said Makovec.
Makovec is thankful to the welcoming staff that have helped her succeed and win this prestigious honor.
“When applying for this job, I was told about the kind-heartedness that is always present here. A contrast to other schools, we have a unique, welcoming environment that is so supportive,” said Makovec.
For students who aspire to become a teacher, Makovec believes it takes these three important qualities: timeliness with planning, patience over time, and compassion for others. She also wants students with this career goal to have flexibility and persistence with challenges.
Often, teachers do not know if a student is having a good day or bad day, so she stresses the importance of understanding others and making sure everyone is okay.
“A key detail in teaching is to know how your students are doing. Whether it be related to school or life outside of EHS, it is important to understand that everyone will not always be on their top game,” said Makovec. “As a teacher, I know that students will have good and bad days, as will everyone. However, despite the days you feel distracted or challenged, you need to continue working hard and strive for your best.”
She also wants students to envision their future and see their potential. “Envisioning yourself will paint the picture in your mind of what you need to do,” said Makovec.
Makovec is thankful for the support of her parents and colleagues for being named Teacher of the Year. Having heard stories from her mother, a long time Kindergarten teacher, she is grateful for the numerous advice and tips that she has received and applied to her own classroom.
For Makovec and many committed educators, teaching is a journey. The stats teacher recognizes and appreciates the support she has consistently received.
“The summer before I started working here was stressful because I was entering an unknown,” said Makovec. “But the constant support and guidance that I receive from the Math Department made my transition easier than anticipated. I joined Learning Leaders to give back and pay that support forward.”
All in all, the veteran’s teacher humility and gratitude is a lasting presence among students and staff at the home of the Eagles.
