Well folks, that time of year is back again. It’s the season to be jolly and festive, reunite with friends and family, and watch as it begins to look a lot like Christmas. People around the world are coming together in joy and harmony as everyone enjoys the smell of hot chocolate and gathers around to see the Christmas lights that gleam across the sky.
On Christmas Eve, it’s a tradition for many families to huddle around the fireplace together and view classic holiday specials and movies. For many of us, The Polar Express will be one of them. This iconic film holds a special place in many people’s hearts. Based on Chris van Allsburg’s 1985 book of the same name, The Polar Express was directed by Robert Zemeckis and features the voice of Tom Hanks in the story of a young boy bound for a one-way ticket to the North Pole.
In the 1950s, a young boy doubts whether Santa Claus is real. While lying in bed on Christmas Eve, he hears a loud train pass by his house. When he heads outside to investigate, he finds the one and only Polar Express, ready to take him on the ride of a lifetime. During the journey, he meets other children, experiences thrilling adventures, and arrives at Santa’s workshop. At the North Pole, he receives the first gift of Christmas—a sleigh bell. The following morning, on Christmas Day, he finds the bell under the Christmas tree with a note from Santa, saying that the bell only rings to those who believe.
The Polar Express teaches us valuable life lessons that extend far beyond the magic of Christmas. It cements the importance of faith—whether it’s in one’s ideals, religion, others, or themselves.

The Hero Boy’s awe and excitement about the sights he sees on the ride reminds the audience that there is always something new to experience every day. There is a surprise at every corner, and it inspires us to learn, explore, and appreciate the little things that make life extraordinary and beautiful. By remaining curious and open minded, we allow ourselves to discover something new and open to new possibilities and adventures, which can bring personal joy and fulfillment.
For over twenty years, The Polar Express hails as a celebration of the Christmas season and of being grateful for all that we have in life. It encapsulates the spirit of the holidays in a way that is comedic yet heartwarming, harking back to childhood memories of Santa and giving to others, while at the same time encouraging us to stay curious on the mysterious road of life, and to never give in to apprehension or hardship. That, I believe, is the truest meaning of the Christmas experience.
