The championship season begins for the Edison High School Track and Field team, with the Greater Middlesex Championship meet ending this past weekend. The team’s performance led to the girls’ coming in 7th and the boys’ team in 3rd.
“We knew it would be tough, but overall it was a great meet with a ton of PRs,” said Moustafa Abdelaal ‘24. “The boys came 3rd overall, which is a huge improvement from last winter season where we came 11th overall.”
Captain Abdelaal ran his first open 400-meter race of the season with a time of 52.16 seconds. This time placed him 4th in the entire meet, earning the team 4 points. This time is a season-best for the sprinter setting a new personal record by 3 seconds.
The 55m hurdle dash was spearheaded by Captain Joseph Pinheiro ‘24, who ran a personal best in a time of 7.88 seconds. This allowed him to take the 5th position in the meet and inched him closer to the New Balance National standard of 7.80 seconds.
The sprinting crew was not the only top performer during this meet. The number two highest jumper in New Jersey, David Brown ‘24, won his event by jumping a height of 6 feet and 4 inches. This performance showed the dominance Brown has been setting this season, as he previously jumped a United States number five performance a week prior at the SJTCA #7 meet.
Other notable performances came from the distance squad in the 800-meter race. Bryce Hickerson ‘26 came through the finish line in 2nd place with a time of 2:02.36 minutes. This not only set a new personal record for the rising senior but allowed him to progress to sectionals, where he had another opportunity to race 800 meters.
“While this performance does not tie my outdoor season time, it is an indoor personal record and I know I have more in the tank for sectionals and nationals,” said Hickerson.
Tanush Lingala ‘27 ran a fast mile, placing him 10th overall in the meet with a time of 4:44 minutes. This is a personal record for the sophomore, which showcases his skill and potential as a rising junior.
“A performance that really stood out to me was Tanush’s mile where he almost medaled as a sophomore,” said Captain Abdelaal.
The Edison Track and Field team continues to perform to their fullest, and the athletes keep breaking records left, right, and center. With Captains Abdelaal and Pinheiro leading the team, the team hopes to continue placing well in the rest of their tournaments.
