Playing sports, gaming, and spending time with friends—while these topics may seem unrelated, they are all hobbies that shape who we are. Hobbies deeply influence a person’s identity, ranging from social circles to life choices. Through hobbies, people can shape their own lives and choose their path in life.
In the midst of social media brain rot and cell phone addictions, hobbies allow people to develop soft skills. For example, some hobbies, such as painting, may require patience; other hobbies, such as playing sports or swimming, may require athleticism and dedication. A wide range of hobbies allows for the development of diverse skill sets.
“I have learned time management and how to balance everything out with my current schedules, so being able to do hobbies alongside my usual schedules,” said Zara Hafeez ’28.
For EHS students, hobbies not only provide joy but also a welcome distraction from the demands of a student. Time management is a universal skill that can be applied to work, school, or personal life, as it is also important to learn to balance entertainment and work. This showcases the scope of personal interests as a critical factor in one’s identity.
Additionally, hobbies serve as an emotional outlet. Some hobbies provide a rush of dopamine, while others are relaxing, though both can help people to cope with harsh situations and relax after a long day. Countless individuals at EHS regard their hobbies as a path to reduce stress and better understand themselves.
“Singing gives me satisfaction, and I always make time to sing at least five minutes a day,” said Sai varshini Narindi ‘27. ”Music in general helps me feel connected to my whole body.”
Many students find their hobbies a great way to unwind, especially after a stressful day. Fast-paced, exhilarating activities are beneficial for clearing one’s mind of negative thoughts, and regular participation in these activities can improve one’s emotional health. On the other hand, leisurely activities aid in decompression and provide tranquility within one’s spirit.
One’s social life is often greatly influenced by one’s hobbies. Participating in group activities cultivates new experiences that provide rewarding opportunities, and often, necessary friendships and networks .
“My hobbies have allowed me to gain the opportunity to meet new people,” said Hafeez.
Engaging in activities, like playing a team sport, creates favorable circumstances to forge lasting connections. When people share a passion, friendship can develop organically over shared experiences. Joining clubs or attending workshops can provide teenagers with a supportive community where members encourage each other’s pursuits.
Furthermore, having hobbies keeps your schedule organized. Having an activity to pursue when one is grappling with the challenges of everyday life provides balance and structure rather than isolation and apathy.
“My hobbies make me more productive in life because they make me have an organized day. If I didn’t have my hobbies, I would lose track of time and start procrastinating more often,” said Nishitha Vojjala ‘25.
Through giving people passion, hobbies motivate people. Hobbies give EHS students a purpose and a direction in life by providing them with a goal that they strive to achieve. Many students claim that without their hobbies, they would be less productive.
“I probably would be lazy and procrastinate more, and now that I do these hobbies, I’m more active and make sure I get my work done, so I have time for these hobbies,” said Hafeez.
Hobbies shape people through personal development, emotional well-being, and social connections. Moreover, hobbies help individuals develop essential soft skills, serve as emotional outlets, and foster new friendships. They also provide structure and motivation, enhancing productivity and offering a sense of purpose in life.
By choosing your hobbies, you take your identity into your own hands.
