By Alesandra Mendez ‘27 and Dayleen Solano ‘28
To end of this year’s spooky season, Edison High School gladly held its annual Halloween Costume Contest. This year, we looked at the trends: what were people wearing? What was popular?
Common trends we noticed included animals, elaborate makeup designs, couple costumes, and coordinated friend group outfits. Cute cartoon characters seemed to be big this year, primarily Spongebob and Spiderman, with around 48% of female students opting for a cartoon character.
On the other hand, male students looked towards the scarier side of Halloween, with costumes designed to spook and thrill.
“There were a lot of people putting in good dedication this year and a lot of time put into these costumes” said JJ Mora ‘24.
Additionally, there was also several students dressed up as characters from recently released movies such as Beetlejuice, Art the Clown, Joker, and Scream. This year we also saw a lot of costumes inspired by popular franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including characters from the franchise’s newly released shows.
This year, many people also did group costumes. Notably, the winners of the costume contest dressed yp as Spongebob Squarepants and Bikini Bottom, reiterating the theme of cartoon costumes Another significant trend observed was the impressive, detailed makeup, consisting of detailed designs that showcased creativity.
“There was a lot of committed face painting” Abby Bushra ‘24.
This year’s contest seemed to demonstrate a preference for fun and cute costumes with scary being a smaller majority.
