As the winter season commences, the Edison boys basketball and Edison girls basketball teams kicked off their season with their opening game against Sayreville on December 14, 2023. The girls at home and the boys at Sayreville, both played outstanding games.

The Edison girls beat Sayreville, 69–28. Olivia Smart ‘25 had nineteen points, with seven two-pointers and five free throws, putting her at the top of individual point contributors in the match.

Ghelsey Go ‘24 followed with five two-pointers, two three-pointers, and one free throw, making a total of seventeen points.

Ade Shittu ‘24 had the most rebounds in the game with a total of twelve rebounds, following Isabella Charles with ten rebounds.

“The girls played very well in our season opener versus Sayreville and it felt great to open the season with a win,” said Girls Varsity Head Coach Mr. Francis Eckert. “Going forward in the season, I expect our team to continue to build as a group and figure out effective ways to be successful together. We have lots of new additions this year, as well as a good balance of athletes that are experienced. With a positive attitude and excellent work ethic, I believe our team will continue to get better and better as the season progresses.”

At Sayreville, the Edison boys, too, put up a great fight, but they came short of the win, 55-67. Ricky Harvey ‘24 put up 23 points, with five two-pointers, three three-pointers, and four free throws. Dheeraj Samparaboyina ‘26 had the most rebounds overall with a total of eleven rebounds.

Head Coach Mr. Charles Mohr said, “We need to play well for 32 minutes and when you don’t do that, the other team is going to take advantage and that is what Sayreville did. I say all the time the season is a marathon, not a sprint. I try to enjoy every practice and every game and I’m always curious how much we can improve each time.”

As the season commences, both the coaches and the players look forward to the rest of the basketball season.
