The Eagles won their fourth match of the winter wrestling season on Friday, January 5, maintaining the team’s undefeated record in the season. Edison ended up with 52 points compared to 27 for East Brunswick.

The meet was full of individual successes for the team. Fernando Avellan ‘26 started out strong by handily winning the first match and securing six points for Edison. He continued his dominant start to the season, winning all four of his matches. While the Eagles lost their next two matches, they would mount a comeback to build a strong lead with pins by Justin Duggan ‘25, Jaden Delabarrera ’24, and Nyekir Eato ‘25.

The rest of the meet would feature similar results for Edison, as they would go on to win five matches compared to three for East Brunswick. Christopher Eagle ‘24, Sean Eagle ‘26, Jeremy Negron ‘26, and Lucas Almonte ‘25 all won for Edison. Negron remains unbeaten this season, and Christopher Eagle ‘26 won his third match of the season.

The whole wrestling team was ecstatic following the victory. Head Coach Mr. Scott Gerba made some game-time decisions, changing the lineup to help ensure victory.

“Extreme situations require extreme measures,” said Gerba on the victory. “We felt like if we did not move around our lineup that we were going to lose. East Brunswick is a big rivalry match so we decided to take some chances to win the match. We asked Justin Duggan and Jaden Delabarrera to move up in weight to help the team win. This would come with risks but the two of them took on the challenge. Jeremy Negron also defeated a highly-ranked opponent that had defeated him earlier in the week. We won the match. We gambled and won but you had to be ready to take the risk!”

Edison currently stands at number one in the White Division of the Greater Middlesex Conference (GMC) and number two in the conference as a whole. Edison has continued right from where they ended last season, as it was 20-4 with the best record in the White Division. They have attained this success despite having a much harder schedule than the previous year. Moreover, the Eagles not only won all their games but won all of their games by twenty or more points. The team looks forward to maintaining this success for the remainder of the season.
