The crowd roared under the bright lights of Edison High School’s football stadium as the girls’ soccer team took on fellow White Division rival South Brunswick in a thrilling match that went into overtime. Though Edison eventually fell to their opponent, the evening continued to be celebrated not only because of the tough fight the Lady Eagles put up but also because family, friends, and fans came together to celebrate six outstanding senior eagles who had left a forever mark on the team.
From the start of the September 29th match to the end, Edison put up a fierce battle. After trailing by 1–0 at halftime, the Eagles came out strong in the beginning of the second half with Jayana Peterson ‘27 equalizing the score following an assist from Kate Weid ‘28. Despite the home support and a hard-fought effort, South Brunswick managed a goal during the first overtime period, edging out Edison 2–1.
Following the game, all of Edison’s six seniors were honored. Senior Sydney Huertas shone, recording twelve saves in the senior night game alone and over 300 in her time as an Edison athlete. The six honorees were:
- Emma Petreski ‘26: Co-Captain and 4-year varsity Defender
- April Herrera ‘26: Co-Captain and Defender
- Kimberly Ochoa ‘26: Defender
- Kallyn Saavedra ‘26: Forward
- Angie Charles ‘26: Midfielder
- Sydney Huertas ‘26: Goalie
“Playing for this team has shaped who I am. Over the past three years, I’ve grown so much as both a player and a person,” Petreski said, reflecting on her time. “Leading as captain this year was an incredible honor, and I’ll always be grateful for the memories and friendships we’ve built together.”
After the game, Ms. Cailin Murelli, honors chemistry teacher and the girls’ head coach, had a heartfelt message to share with her seniors: “To my graduating seniors: I am so proud of your growth not only as players but also as people and leaders over the course of your time at EHS,” she said. “Thank you for your positive impact on the program, and remember: once an Eagle, always an Eagle.”
