Section leader and Drum Major for the Edison High School Marching Band, Feihao “Ryan” Li ’26, has earned the title of November’s Rotary Senior of the Month. Throughout his four years at EHS, Li has been actively involved in Edison High’s band program. Whether performing in the Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble, or Marching Band, music has been a defining part of his high school experience.
Li shared that when he first learned he had been selected as Senior of the Month, he was taken by surprise.
“I honestly didn’t expect it,” he said. “After talking to Mr. Ross, I was extremely grateful for the opportunity to become November’s Senior of the Month.”
Deeply committed to the band program, Li served as section leader during his junior year and drum major during his senior year. He explained that these roles were especially meaningful because of the close-knit community he built within the band.
Among his favorite experiences were the marching band competitions. His freshman year stood out to him in particular, when the group won multiple awards at their state and national competitions. His senior year was similarly memorable, especially when he conducted at MetLife Stadium and helped end the season on the podium at both states and nationals.
Li also credits the band program with helping him grow personally during high school. He described himself as much quieter as a freshman, noting that leading such a large group encouraged him to speak up more.
Looking ahead, Li plans to major in electrical and computer engineering in college. He expects to remain in the state, with Rutgers as one of his top selections.
Li encourages underclassmen to get involved in at least one extracurricular activity, emphasizing that it is never too late to join.
“It’s the community you can build from just one program. That’s really comforting,” he said.
