On October 29, Edison High’s UNICEF chapter hosted its annual Badminton for Charity event, bringing in sixteen teams among different grades and experience levels in badminton.
After beating three other teams, the Shuttle Shockers, an all-freshman group, won this year’s tournament. The victors—Mahasvin Kota ‘29, Daksh Mahajan ‘29, Dev Patel ‘29, and Vishwajith Vijayavarman ‘29—received this year’s title and gift cards to EHS’s ShopRite.
Through this competition, students not only played badminton, but also helped raise $250. This money is collected to help the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), a UN agency that aims to support children worldwide through advocacy and fundraising events.

“Knowing that we were not only having fun,” said Kota, “but that we were helping others in need boosted the enjoyment of the experience by giving me the feeling that I was doing something worthwhile.”
Others shared similar opinions about the balance of fun and helping those in need.
“The money being donated to charity felt like I was doing a good deed by having fun,” said Mahajan. “Even though I was having fun, I was satisfied with where my money was going. Even though it was cheap, it was helping people in need.”
This sense of impact contributed to a positive atmosphere that seemed to resonate with both participants and organizers.
“I like Badminton for Charity because it is a great way to raise money for charity while promoting school spirit through a fun activity,” said EHS UNICEF President Siya Bhuteja ‘26.
The annual Badminton for Charity event highlighted that even a small fundraiser can help make a difference. And, EHS’s UNICEF chapter hopes even more students will get more involved, keeping this tradition alive for years to come.
