Continuing with their success in hallway decorating, the sophomore student council expanded school activities on December 12 by debuting Edison High’s first dine-in movie night. The event featured a screening of the Christmas film The Polar Express and movie-inspired snacks.
While sophomore attendees were the majority, students from nearly all grade levels attended to enjoy the movie with blankets, hoodies, and Uggs to relieve the stress of the school week and ease into the weekend.
To promote the event, council members offered two options to attend the event. The first was The Golden Ticket, referencing the actual Polar Express’ tickets. The special ticket granted the viewer access to additional themed foods. The food consisted of both homemade and store-bought items, and a concession stand with more treats was set up to raise money for future events.
“I loved the hot chocolate, and the popcorn was amazing,” said Jahnavi Gundakalle ’28. “I would definitely invite my friends. I would tell them to get their PJs on and grab a blanket.”
Students heard about the event through different sources—some from morning announcements and others from the poster on top of the cafeteria entry. Some students were brought into it by peers.
“I am Suri Nguyen ‘26’s sibling, and her friend’s sister told us about this event,” said Sabrina Nguyen. Nguyen, a 7th grader, was one of a few younger students from outside Edison High who attended that evening. With the success of their movie night—the first major event for the sophomores—the council hopes for future movie nights, increased attendance at class council events, and ultimately greater school spirit.
It was clear that the Class of 2028 put significant effort into the movie night, overcoming various difficulties to support the sophomore council.
“We are hoping that [the event] is profitable. I think we have raised more than $175, which is the money gained just by people buying tickets alone,” said Class Treasurer Disha Patel ‘28. “We are still calculating the money from anyone who bought concessions during the movie.”
This event, one of many to be held, was just the first step in fundraising for the Class of 2028’s prom and barbecue. The success inspired future initiatives that the board has for Edison High.
“I think it was really enjoyable,” said Class President Ziling Ouyang ’28. “People were really happy as well. I would hope to do more.”
