Winter has returned in full force, but the students at Edison High are ready to fight back with their arsenal of warm-weather attire.
As temperatures in Edison continue to drop, many students are finding inventive ways to combat the brutal weather. From layering with their hoodies and jackets to wearing their coziest shoes, students at EHS are finding ways to warm themselves up while remaining stylish.
“I’ve been wearing puffer jackets and thick sweaters,” said Samaira Khandai ‘28. “It’s the best way to keep yourself warm.”
When it comes to the wintry season, having an insulated puffer is an essential part of surviving the harsh winter weather. Throughout the years, the styles of jackets often aligned with the current trends of the time. From the 1960s to the 1980s, leather jackets served as a symbol of rebellion, and later, they became increasingly associated with punk subculture. Today, jackets are connected to technology, with an emphasis on eco-friendly and sustainable options. Despite changes in jacket styles, jackets play a major part in fashion culture—in addition to other necessary accessories.
“I bought gloves recently and wear them every morning,” says Shahmir Tariq ‘28.
EHS students find that gloves are a convenient item to keep in the closet too. Like other clothes, gloves have evolved both in terms of fashion and function. Gloves during the 16th century were seen as a symbol of power—often sewn with jewels. Afterwards, in the 18th-20th century, gloves became a staple in women’s closets. Before, gloves were made out of silk and velvet. Although such fashion choices are no longer emphasized, gloves are still important in ensuring people stay warm during long and chilly winters. Along with gloves, many students also bring their scarves and fuzzy socks to remain stylish in the winter weather. These small accessories can make sure every inch of your body is covered and stays warm in the frigid climate.
Although many prefer to stay home in the cold weather, winter track athletes don’t have much of a choice but to be outside.
“Thermals under clothes are a must,” said Sophia Chen ‘29. “Sometimes I wear leggings under my sweatpants.”
As these runners continue to practice outside despite the weather, many of them wear a thermal layer under their clothing to successfully push through the winter winds. Throughout the week, these runners are outside five days a week for practice; therefore, they rely on sufficient layering to stay warm.
For many students, carrying a jacket around school may be considered a hassle, especially if they don’t own a locker. Due to this, many students have described their consistent battle between convenience and warmth.
“Sometimes I don’t bring a jacket to school so I don’t have to carry it around,” said Jorelle Enqriquez ‘28. “But I get very cold when I am walking out of the school, so it is very annoying.”
Although having a jacket may be useful in cold weather, it can become an inconvenience when you are inside a building. Many have to choose between carrying a giant coat all day and staying warm outside.
But, the EHS community has several other specific tricks to stay warm and appear stylish in winter.
“I would recommend everyone to cover their ears with beanies,” said Ayaan Shaikh ‘26. “I think UGG boots are also a great way to stay warm and look stylish.”
Beanies are a great way to protect your eyes, ears, and face from the winter weather. The snug fit on the head allows maximum comfort while staying warm. A beanie can be added to an outfit to add personality, often complementing an outfit with color. UGG Boots are another popular winter attire choice. The inside of UGG shoes is covered with fur, which provides more warmth. UGGs also come in many different colors, allowing them to be paired with various outfits.
“As a teacher, it’s all about staying warm while also remaining professional,” said Honors English and AP Literature teacher Mrs. Evan Craig. “Long peacoats, scarves, and boots are a way to stay stylish.”
It is important for teachers to abide by the dress code even in winter. A peacoat allows one to look professional while maintaining comfort.
Edison High students also use scarves and boots to add more variety to outfits and accessories.
“I recommend a North Face puffer,” said Jessica Yuan ‘27. “I have one, and it keeps me warm in cold weather.”
The North Face puffer has gained significant traction in recent years despite the elevated price. For many, the black and lightweight material makes it extremely popular among teenagers. The jacket provides warmth and comfort while adding a classy look to the outfit.
Despite the drop in temperature during winter, Edison High students and staff continue to prove that warmth and style can complement each other.
