In today’s rapidly evolving world, STEM is driving innovation across every industry, meaning that schools play a crucial role in preparing students for the future. As STEM fields continue to dominate the workforce, Edison Township Public Schools has taken a proactive approach through the Edison High STEM Academy: a program designed to foster the next generation of leaders.
The EHS STEM Academy is a four-year comprehensive program designed to prepare students interested in engineering or STEM-based fields. Through a combination of advanced coursework, students in the academy develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and technical skills that prepare them for success in STEM careers.
“The academies prioritize student voice and exploration, helping students refine their interests while building confidence, resilience, and a strong academic foundation for post-secondary success,” said Ms. Kristen Tsaoys, the Supervisor of Academic Programs.
Throughout their four years, students take a rigorous course load which includes AP Biology, AP Chemistry, and AP Calculus BC, alongside engineering elective courses like Engineering Graphics and Engineering Innovation. In their senior year, students participate in a capstone project where they utilize the skills they have accumulated from their time in the program.
“The EHS STEM Academy has given my fellow peers and I access to amazing opportunities and materials to help us in our future endeavors,” said Hasini Vummaji ‘27. “It has also allowed our cohort to become a tight-knit community of students who look out for each other as we persevere through the challenging curriculum.”
With each year’s cohort being about 48 students for the current freshman class and onward, the academy fosters strong bonds among its students, leading to lifelong friendships. Students feel a sense of belonging as they motivate each other to be and try their best.
“The academies prioritize student voice and exploration, helping students refine their interests while building confidence, resilience, and a strong academic foundation for post-secondary success,” said Ms. Tsaoys.
The Edison High School STEM Academy equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in their academic paths. By providing exposure to the real-world industry, helping build essential skills like problem-solving and critical thinking, and by emphasizing students’ interests, the STEM Academy is shaping innovators who will make an impact in tomorrow’s society.
