The Edison High School varsity girls basketball team finished their latest season with seven wins and eight losses. The varsity girls team won their first ever Marissa Tufaro Pod Championship, beating both Old Bridge and East Brunswick. Mr. Frank Eckert, Mr. Robert Roma, Mr. Brian Appeman, and Ms. Kari Speiss coached for the varsity girls team.

During this season, the varsity team consisted of fourteen girls who made notable contributions throughout the abbreviated season. Shania Wolfe-White ‘21 accounted for most of the team’s offense throughout the year, scoring 144 points and recording 83 assists with 37 steals on the defensive end. Ghelsey Go ‘24 led the team in scoring, contributing 210 points, 136 rebounds, and 29 blocked shots.  Go was also selected for the Greater Middlesex County 2nd Team All Red Division and New Jersey’s Top Sixty Girls Basketball Freshmen.

The varsity girls team did not play as many games as they normally would, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But despite the shortened season, the team was able to play all games listed on their abbreviated schedule. Many other teams in the conference missed games due to COVID-19 exposures and quarantine procedures.

“The COVID regulations did not bother me as much as they did most people, but I did wish we did not have a shortened season,” Go stated. She also remarked that the restrictions are understandable for the safety of the athletes.

Shania Wolfe-White ‘21, Julissa Encarnacion ‘21, and Gya Payumo ‘21 are the graduating seniors of the varsity girls team.

“Although we lose our starting backcourt, we are excited to see what the 2021-2022 season brings, returning a very talented group of young ladies,” Coach Roma said.
